IPOB's sit-at-home order fails in Imo state

While panic reigned in states like Abia over the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in conjunction with a faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), it was reportedly snubbed by residents of Imo state.

The failure of the order in Imo was largely due to a counter-instruction from Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, the original founder of MASSOB and leader of the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM).

The order was to be carried out on Friday, September 23, but Vanguard reports that residents in Imo state went about their activities as all the markets, schools, medical facilities, financial houses and other business concerns remained open.

The report also said security operatives were positioned at various strategic areas of the state to forestall any likely disturbance.

The report quoted the commissioner of police, Taiwo Lakanu, as saying his men were fully primed for action.

Lakanu said: “This command is very friendly to law abiding citizens, but usually hard on miscreants. I advice IPOB loyalists to try their luck elsewhere because we are fully primed for action.

“I am therefore, assuring Imo people that this command has installed adequate measures to effectively counter any IPOB uprising.”

Speaking through his director of information, Mr Sunday Okerafor, Uwazuruike had urged his followers to ignore the order to sit at home.

He said: “The IPOB order is selfish and I’ll timed.

“Giving such an order in the face of the current economic hardship inflicted on Ndigbo by the Nigerian government, will cause more harm than good.”
