Some protesters on Wednesday, October 5, stormed the ministry of justice in demand for the prosecution of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria

The protesters also urged the federal government to cut ties with the Republic of Iran over alleged terrorism activities in Nigeria

Some protesters on Wednesday, October 5, stormed Nigeria’s federal ministry of justice over Nigerian government relationship with the Republic of Iran.

The protesters who carried various placards also called for the prosecution of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Some of the placards read: “Prosecute El-Zakzaky now!, Stop Iran from sponsoring terrorism in our country!, We are peaceful people and IMN is a terrorist organization” among others.

Speaking during the protest organized by a civil society organization, the Sovereign Rights Coalition (SRC), Daniel Obaje, the leader of the group said the IMN leader must be prosecuted for the role he played in the attack on the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai’s convoy.

He also said attacks by some human rights group and western media organizations on the issue can only be described as blackmail.

“It is pertinent for the immediate arraignment and prosecution of the leader of the sect on terror charges as deemed appropriate,” Obaje said.

Obaje said the group has also discovered that the relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of Iran has become “cancerous” and will only be beneficial if such tie is not severed.

“It also chief among our demand that apart from ceasing all diplomatic relationships with the Iranian republic, a total removal of her embassy from Nigerian soil is pertinent and apt.

“All blackmails by bodies including human right groups as well as western media come to an end as it amounts to an affront on the sovereignty of Nigeria,” he said.

Obaje added: “It is not news that the group, Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) led by its leader Mr. Ibraheem El Zakzakky had launched an attack on the Chief of Army Staff and his convoy in Kaduna where in the course of the operation where he was arrested and a cache of arms was recovered.”

“It has been nearly a year since this unfortunate event and these debauchers have continued to exhibit this impermissible crass negligence of the nation’s sovereignty in their hooded attempts to annex the nation to form their own republic,” he said.

He further added that the Shiite group have gone beyond causing crisis but are now focused on destabilizing the nation and its integrity through sponsored protests and blackmail.

Receiving the group, Princess Okorie, a director at the federal ministry of justice, who also represented the attorney general of the federation Abubakar Malami said the group’s efforts is appreciated.

She also said, the group’s grievance will be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for necessary actions to be taken.

Meanwhile the Department of State Service which has held El-Zakzaky since December 5, 2015, had told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the Shiite leader was being held under protective custody.

The DSS said El-Zakzaky approved of his detention for his own security safety.
