Another Niger Delta militant group emerges, makes demands

Another militant group, the Niger Delta Volunteers (NDV) has emerged in Akwa Ibom state

The group threatened to shut down some major oil installations if President Buhari fails to extend the ongoing dialogue with Niger Delta Avengers to them

The militants threatened to go after selfish paramount rulers who connive with oil companies to siphon money meant for community development A new militant group identified as the Niger Delta Volunteers (NDV), has announced its presence in Akwa Ibom state.

The group claimed responsibility for an attack on a gas pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Nigeria Gas Company (NGC), which supplies gas to ALSCON at Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom state, The Nation reports.

This was contained in a statement issued by its spokesman, Commander Ekpo Ekpo. The pipeline was attacked last Thursday but the state government and police commissioner Murtala Mani claimed it was a leakage.

The statement read: “We, the Niger Delta Volunteers, have condemned the recent claim by Akwa Ibom state government that the attack on NNPC gas line was a leakage.

“The gas pipeline belonging to NNPC/NGC and supplying gas to ALSCON at Ikot Abasi, was attacked by our professionals at exactly 11.45 a.m on Thursday, June 16, as a welcome to Mr. President. who was due in the country that Thursday, to record our grievances and announce the presence of the Niger Delta Volunteers in Akwa Ibom State to fight injustice, marginalisation and oppression for the common people

. “It is very sad that the governor we worked for and delivered could deceive the world that the attack was a leakage; even the community around that axis can testify that it was an explosion and not a leakage, as claim.”

The group called on the state government and state executive council to stop deceiving the people but rather deliver dividends of democracy.

The NDV demanded that the ongoing dialogue between the federal government and the Niger Delta militants should be extended to Akwa Ibom state or they will shut down some major platforms and flow lines in the state.

“Very soon, we will move after some selfish paramount rulers who connive with oil companies to siphon money meant for community development. Enough is enough.

“Soon, we will unveil our website, twitter and facebook,” the group added.

Though the police commissioner had told reporters that the rumoured bombing was not a militant attack, a highly placed source confirmed the attack on the NNPC pipeline

The state government also debunked rumours of pipeline bombing at Ikot Osute in Oruk Anam local government area, calling for calm among the residents, who might have been troubled by the rumour.

The renewed militancy in the Niger Delta region is a major concern for the administration of President MUhammadu Buhari. In recent times, new militant groups have been emerging in the oil-rich region.

On June 8, a new militant group called the Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta (UWND) emerged. The group demanded that give 60 percent oil blocks to the Niger Delta region.

Weeks back, another Niger Delta militant group, the Red Egbesu Water Lions announced their emergence, vowing to team up with the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in ensuring zero production of oil and gas in the region if the NDA’s demands are not met.
