Charly Boy needs to take a chill pill

As Charly Boy continues to make the news unusually, it becomes imperative to address his antics

The exact reasons behind the controversial entertainer’s actions remain unclear

But be that as it may, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa needs to take a chill pill once and for all

Over the years, we have come to see celebrities and public figures make several moves that are geared towards winning public affection and consequently financial returns and goodwill. It is no surprise.

Against this backdrop, there is the need to critically examine Charles Chukwuemeka ‘Charly Boy’ Oputa, a popular Nigerian entertainer and broadcaster who has gotten into more controversies all through his career than he has done probably anything else.

If you didn’t know better, you’d wonder if he was hungry for fortune, fame or something else.  But Charly Boy doesn’t exactly fit into anything of a person financially in need, at least from what insiders say.

Then surely there must be more to it. It has to be the need to be heard, the need to stay in the news and by so doing amass some more publicity for his not-so-gliterring music career. There are tell-tale signs that he wants some of the cream that is Nigeria’s buzzing music industry of today.

He sees himself as a veteran, well, many others will rate him that high given his outputs in the 1980s. but that’s where it ends. Nothing more.

In May 2016, Charly Boy covered a Prince song titled Kiss. He clearly wants some of that cake. He might be financially stable but he wants some of that mainstream buzz of 21st century entertainment, as well as the appeal it comes with. Charly Boy loves attention and he enjoys setting up a vortex of controversy in his wake. It is something we have come to know him for.

Sometimes, however, he goes way beyond the usual and gets people wondering what his exact agendas are.

Charly Boy can strut into an event with a security detail that’s a bit too big for a man in his mould.

Or you can see him strutting at Allen, Ikeja, Lagos; his car packed conspicuously by the road and his goons sitting right inside waiting for him to make whatever enquiries it is at maybe a bank, an electronic store or some place similar. They sit inside the vehicle, all eyes behind shades, as though ready for a war and needing only slight priming to fully explode. This is the man Charly Boy is, this is the image he has built over the years.

Charly Boy loves controversies, he loves disturbing the flow of things in the media. He is a huge figure whose MO is swimming against the tides more often than not. And he doesn’t mince words.

If he isn’t making a statement against the guys in political offices today, then he is fighting for gays in society whose rights he thinks have been trampled upon.

Other times, he is castigating fake pastors in Nigeria and the rest times he is creating one buzz or another. There’s never a quiet era with him around.

Whatever the case, Mr. Charles Oputa needs to take a chill pill. While his fans and followers may love his brand of being vocal, he needs to leave some of his antics for the younger generation. That ship has sailed, clearly. This isn’t the time for him to be immersed in creating controversies, neither is it time for him to try reinventing himself musically if that’s perhaps his reason or one of his reasons for the hysteria that he’s become known for in recent times.
