Gunmen storm Delta state govt house, kill driver

A robbery attack on Thursday, August 4, at the Delta state government house has left one dead and many others in total shock.

According to a report on The Punch, suspected armed robbers stormed the Delta state government house Annexe, Warri, when members of the Delta State Waterways Security Committee were holding a meeting, killing a driver attached to the Annex.

The incident which occurred at about 11am, caused chaos in the area as security agents attached to the Annex scampered for safety amid gunshots.

The chairman of the committee, Boro Opodu, and his members also fled for safety during the incident.

It was gathered that the gunmen had trailed the late driver who was said to be carrying a large amount of money meant for the officials of the Waterways Committee, when they opened fire at the vehicle as it made its way into the Annex.

But despite the gun shots, the driver drove into the premises of the Annex with bullet wounds and later died before he could be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A source disclosed in the condition of anonymity that the money with the driver was withdrawn from one of the new generation banks in the city.

“The gunmen reportedly trailed one of our drivers who was sent to cash some money for the Delta State Waterways Security committee who was having a meeting at the Annex.

“We all fled for safety including the security agents because nobody knew what was happening other than sound of gun shots. They entered the Government House with the driver trying to collect the money. We were all afraid,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the report, Charles Aniagwu, the chief press secretary to the Delta government, said: “It was a group of armed robbers who were chasing a driver from the Government House Annex that went to the bank.

“They pursued him as he was driving back. He rammed into the Government House gates and ran out of the car.

“They started shooting at the vehicle. Unfortunately, we lost him and I heard they have apprehended three of the suspects.”
