The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned members against thinking they could buy the party.
Senator Walid Jubrin, chairman of the BoT, spoke while inaugurating the national convention committee led by the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the convention where party leaders would be elected.
The convention holds on August 17 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and Jubrin warned delegates to refuse to be bought over by money bags. Leadership reports that while speaking earlier, the national caretaker committee chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, revealed that no aspirant was zoned out of contesting any position in the party under any guise.
The south-south zone of the party had met on August 4 and zoned the position of the national chairman to the south-west. Those who had expressed in the top job are outgoing national vice chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus (South-east); national vice chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh (South-south); former deputy national vice chairman, Chief Bode George (South-west); Chief Raymond Dokpesi (south-south) and Senator Bode Olajumoke (South-west).
Dokpesi and George have reportedly obtained their expression of interest forms. This decision on zoning resulted in speculation that the party may have edged out Chief Raymond Dokpesi from the south-south and other contenders for the position in favour of Chief Bode George and a few others.
Jubrin said: “Like the chairman has said, we are passing the era of impunity and selfishness. We are going to learn from the past and move forward with fairness and justice.
“It is always go for communities to come together and sit down and agree on a suggestion on how to go forward. The decision of the community and family is what should be and not that of an individual. “But where such opportunity is given it is very difficult for one to stop any member of the community from participating.
It is a suggestion but in most cases it pay everyone to follow the suggestion. “This party is not for sale. This party must be a party of very conscious people. If it were left to me, I will tell every delegate to reject anybody that come with money. “We are an honest and upright person. This party will not want somebody that will come and buy his way into office. The BoT will no longer accept any leadership to be forced on the party.”
Jubrin lamented that over 15 court cases are pending so far, but said he was optimistic that the issue would be resolved during the convention. “I recall when we last met here to inaugurate the zoning committee and I mentioned on behalf of the caretaker committee that the convention would be an all-inclusive one and that offices to be contested for would be open to all and sundry, that doesn’t mean people cannot come together to zone offices.
“If zoning does not favour you and you still think that you have the best chance of winning, the political landscape is there. “It’s up to you to campaign across the country to get enough delegates to support you. Zoning doesn’t mean you have been excluded, it is meeting of the minds. “And it is for every aspirant to assess by himself or herself whether he or she has the capacity to garner more support than. Collection of people that come together to have a common position,” he added. The convention is targeted at finally resolving the leadership crisis rocking the party.
Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted national chairman of the party, has continued with legal fireworks against the party with the hope that he would be returned to the position.
