PDP is not sponsoring Niger Delta Avengers – Turnah

Barrister George Turnah, a PDP chieftain, dismisses claims that the party has links with militant group Niger Delta Avengers

Turnah says PDP is only concerned about re-positioning itself

He says the crisis in PDP is a “family affair” which would be sorted out for the greater good of the majority

Barrister George Turnah, a deputy chairmanship candidate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Bayelsa state, has dismissed claims that the party is sponsoring some militant groups, including Niger Delta Avengers, Vanguard reports.

Turnah was reacting to allegations that his party sponsor militants to frustrate the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, August 11, after he collected nominations forms for the deputy chairmanship position, Barrister Turnaj disclosed that the PDP is only concerned about re-positioning itself.

He says the party plans to robustly engage the government in power in order for Nigerians to derive the best benefits of democracy.

He said: “You are journalists and we all can remember that the media had reported before now that MEND was dead. Sometimes, when it suits us, we like to make issues out of nothing. We have problems in the Niger Delta, East, North and some other places and we are supposed to be seeking solutions to them.

“These things do not get us anywhere. I know that allegations, when you make them, you also take further steps to prove them, you do not just make such weighty allegations. Who takes pleasure in taking blood? We may not all be angels in the party, but when you talk about militancy in the region, it is purely a regional issue, of a people asking for their rights and other privileges, it is not a PDP matter.”

On the crisis in the PDP, Turnah says it is a “family affair” which would be sorted out for the greater good of the majority.

“I assure you that what is happening in the PDP would soon come to an end, not through the courts anyway, we are going to talk to ourselves and people would have to shift grounds, make some concessions in the interest of all”, he stated.

The Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for series of bombing of oil and gas pipelines in the region but during the weekend, a splinter group, Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) released a list of its alleged sponsors and named former president Goodluck Jonathan as one of them.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, the RNDA also listed the Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state as sponsors of the NDA.

Others mentioned in the list were Chief Edwin Clark, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Senator Godswill Akpabio; ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), the founder, African Independent Television, Raymond Dokpesi, Kingsley Kuku, Kimi Angozi, and Patrick Akpobolokemi.

The group said the NDA sympathizers are Daniel Alabrah; Tony Uranta, Daniel, Ms. Annkio Briggs, and a former spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh.

The Reformed Niger Delta Avengers also named Oyege Nimi Brown, VIP Timothy, Joshua Macaiver, Paul Bebenimibo, among others, as the main operatives of the NDA.

It added that the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri, aka Brig. Gen. Murdoch Agbinibo, served as the NDA’s chief spokesman.

However, Jonathan through his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, denied the accusation and said there was a plot to assassinate him.
