Why Jonathan visited Buhari at Aso Rock

Buhari hosted ex-president Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential villa in Abuja

 – Speaking to the reporters later, the ex-president said he was working to ensure peace in the Niger Delta region

 – While he denied speaking on anti-graft war, Jonathan stressed that a united Nigeria was needed
President Muhammadu Buhari has received his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Rock presidential villa on Wednesday, August 3.

Former president denied speaking on the current anti-graft war launched by President Buhari which has led to the probe and prosecution of many of his assistants.

Speaking to the state house reporters, Jonathan said it would not be correct for him to discuss the matter because many of the cases were waiting in court.

Meanwhile, he stated that the meeting which continued less than 20 minutes gave him the opportunity of briefing the incumbent leader of his recent international engagements and future ones.

Addressing the issue of the increasing in the attacks in Niger Delta, ex-president said it was appropriate for him and traditional rulers in the area to mediate in the crisis.

He stressed that a united Nigeria was needed, saying there cannot be development anywhere without peace. According to him, the country is great not because of oil, but because her size and diversity. We have gathered three possible reasons that can explain the meeting of two leaders.

 1. Niger Delta crisis Ex-president Jonathan probably just wants to drop tips on how Buhari can stop the attacks of the militants and other vandals of the oil and gas pipelines that damaged Nigerian economy. The Niger Delta Avengers’ attacks caused a major drop in Nigeria’s oil output from 2.2m to 1.65m barrels per day.

 2. State of the economy Under the Jonathan government the Nigerian naira was more stable than one year under Buhari has been. Many Nigerians have been criticizing the incumbent leader over the continual economic hardship.

 3. Anti-corruption war Buhari’s presidential campaign strategy was mainly anchored on the fight against corruption and the massive looting of Nigeria’s wealth by political cabals. Since assuming the office the president has launched a fierce fight against graft.

Among the many Nigerians who have been prosecuted for corruption are Jonathan’s close associates. Ex-president Olusegen Obasanjo recently held a close-door meeting with President Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja and part of what was discussed focused on Senate President Bukola Saraki.
