Barely a week after a Nigerian hung himself and blamed the economy for his action, there was serious confusion at the Lekki area of Lagos state, western Nigeria on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 after an American businessman reportedly committed suicide inside a hotel.
The American was said to be identified as 57-year-old Charles Carlson and was on a business trip to Nigeria.
The Vanguard reports that the incident occurred at an unnamed hotel located on 8, African Line, Lekki Phase 1.
The confusion began when it was noted that the guest did not come out for breakfast and calls to her room were ignored.
The report said this led to apprehension forcing the hotel manager, Vincent Onwunke, to contact the deceased’s business partner, who rushed to the hotel.
Upon opening the door to his room, his body was found dangling.
A rope was found tied to his neck by the door.
Alerted, policemen from the Maroko division of Lagos arrived the hotel to move his corpse to a morgue.
The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson for the state police command, Dolapo Badmus, who said the commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, had directed that the case be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
In Nigeria, reports have shown that more people now commit suicide as a result of the current economic situation with many workers yet to be paid and unable to fend for their families.
