Nwoha Amaechi, ex-lawmaker in Imo state Assembly said the suspension of Abdulmumin Jibrin by the House of Representatives was well deserved.

According to him, Jibrin violated the standing rule of the lower chamber of the National Assembly by his actions.

Amaechi said: “Publicly levelling unfounded allegations against his fellow members in spite of the party’s intervention is unethical of a lawmaker.

“He went too far in his actions. He went to the Press first to make allegations, exposing the House’s internal matters to the Press. He deserved to be suspended.”

While condemning corruption in its entirety, Amaechi called on all stakeholders to restore the image of the country by shunning corruption.

However, he expressed confidence in the standing rule of the National Assembly, saying it was impartial.

He said: “If Jibrin had, at the beginning and before the signing of the budget, reported foul play by even bringing the matter to the attention of security agents, he would have been vindicated; but he didn’t.

“His action was like an afterthought; he created room for suspicion; in fact, he shot himself on the leg.”

We recalls that Abdulmumin Jibrin, former chairman of the Appropriation Committee, was suspended by the Federal House of Representatives for 180 legislative days on Wednesday, September 28.

According to reports, the House of Reps seats three days in a week and this subsequently means that Jibrin’s suspension would continue for more than a year.

Jibrin will also not be able to hold any position of responsibility for the span of the current National Assembly. The lawmaker would also not receive salaries or allowances.

The suspended lawmaker on July 21, a day after he was eased out as chairman of the Appropriation committee, sparked one of the biggest parliamentary scandals over budget padding.

Jibrin made grievous allegations against Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun, Minority Leader Leo Ogor and Chief Whip Alhassan Dogowa on their complicity in the insertion of fictitious items in the 2016 budget.

He submitted petitions in respect of the allegations to the EFCC and other relevant security agencies to investigate the matter.
