Man exchanges abducted kids for bags of rice

The recession that has hit Nigeria is manifesting in petty stealing and other bizarre actions of some of the country’s citizens

Kidnapping is a major crime in many states of the nation, but Joshua engaged in it not for ransom, but the unexpected

Less than 24 hours after a Nigerian committed suicide with a note that attributed his action to the shameful state of the nation, a report says another Nigerian, simply with the name, Joshua, has abducted two siblings and exchanged them for two bags of rice.

A bag of rice has become very expensive as a result of Nigeria’s economic situation

The incident happened in Lagos, according to the state police command, which confirmed that it had arrested the suspect, a middle-aged man.

Joshua reportedly abducted the two siblings aged 13 and 8, while they were returning from extra-moral classes in the Satellite area of the state, took them to a shop at 63, Marwa Road, near Chemist Bus Stop, and exchanged them for bags of rice.

The owner of the shop later learnt that Joshua was not the father of the children, but this was after he left with the bags of rice.

One of the witnesses at the scene, who gave her name as John Ifeoma, explained that the real father of the two siblings suddenly showed up after Joshua left.

The children’s father claimed they were hypnotised by their kidnapper and called the police.

The children were later released to their biological father while the suspect was arrested, according to Daily Post, which said the police spokesperson in the state, Dolapo Badmus, confirmed the incident.

Nigeria recently entered recession after signs that all was not well had continued for many months.

In many states of the nation, workers and pensioners are owed various sums in wages, salaries and arrears and there seems to be no end in sight to their predicaments.

Within the last three days, three major businesses, two in the aviation industry, as well as one in the car assembly industry, have shut down businesses as a result of the very harsh economic situation of the country.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mufutau Egberongbe, recently told NAIJ.com that the situation had reached the crescendo with married women now going into prostitution just to provide food for their families.
