PDP wants Godwin Obaseki disqualified from Edo election

Four days to the gubernatorial election in Edo state, the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the state, has asked a Federal High Court, Benin division, to disqualify Mr Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), from contesting the election.

This happened while President Muhammadu Buhari and other top members of the APC campaigned in Benin, the state capital, for Obaseki on Tuesday, August, 6, 2016.

Chief Dan Orbih, chairman of the PDP, says his party wants Obaseki disqualified

Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who disclosed this at a press briefing, said Obaseki should be disqualified from the election for allegedly making false claims and providing false information on oath to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He therefore called on voters in the state not to waste their votes for the APC because the party has no candidate for the election.

Joined in the suit No. FHC/B/CO/120/16, dated September 1, 2016, filed by Chief Joseph Aghimien, SAN, on behalf of the PDP, and Professor Edoba Omoregie, its legal adviser, are Mr Godwin Obaseki and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Orbih said the party is asking the court for a declaration that Obaseki’s statement that he graduated from the University of Ibadan with a BA in Classical Studies in 1976, made under oath in INEC form CF001 at Part B, paragraph C, dated July 11, 2016, is false.

In addition, the party is asking for a declaration disqualifying Obaseki from contesting the Edo state governorship election scheduled for September 10 2016, on grounds that he submitted false information on oath to the INEC on Form CF001.

Orbih added that apart from misleading the INEC with false information, the fact that Obaseki failed to declare if he is a member of a secret society disqualifies him from contesting for the office of governor of Edo state.

The PDP chairman also said Obaseki has failed to fulfill the requirements of the constitution which in section 182 (I) H, specifies the qualifications a person must have to contest the governorship of a state.

Obaseki was recently faced with a certificate scandal which the PDP in the state said it was investigating.

The party accused the governorship candidate of forging one of the academic credentials he submitted for the election.

The allegation came barely a week after Obaseki announced the recovery of his missing certificates to the public.
