IPOB called on Biafra supporters to stay at home on Friday
The police however cautioned the group not to force people to stay at home
Residents in the region were asked to go about their normal duties
Ahead of the planned protest in support for Nnamdi Kanu organised by the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), the police in Imo has issued a serious warning.
Kanu was apprehended in October 2015 by security operatives on treasonable charges and has been in detention since then.
Members of IPOB announced a stay-at-home protest scheduled for Friday, September 23 but the commissioner of police in Imo, Mr Taiwo Lakanu warned members of the group not to breach the peace in the region.
He said the group has no right to force people to stay at home.
“We will arrest and prosecute any IPOB member if any of their actions leads to breach of security and public peace.
“Agitators must find a legal ways of making their grievances known to the authorities and not to create panic in the society.
“Police is in charge of any situation in the state, and we are ever ready to ensure a violence-free state.”
The police urged people in the state to go about their business without any fear of intimidation.
Meanwhile, top military officials issued a warning to the secessionists to desist.
The chief of defence staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin warned IPOB members to desist or face the wrath of security operatives.
He also extended the same warning to militants who have been terrorising the Niger Delta region to stop or will be dealt with.
