Governor David Umahi has handed cars worth N19 million to his commissioners

The 2016 Prado Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) was given to each member of the Ebonyi state executive council

The governor says the gesture is geared towards boosting the commissioners’ performance

Governor David Umahi has handed cars worth N19 million to each member of the Ebonyi state executive council, The Guardian reports.

Governor Umahi who handed over the cars to the commissioners yesterday October 10, in Abakaliki, said the gesture is geared towards boosting the commissioners’ performance.

He also said they agreed on N15.5 million for the supply of each vehicle when a dollar was about N300, but the exchange rate later changed the price to N19 million.

The governor’s gesture is coming three months after he gave each of the 24 members of the Ebonyi state House of Assembly the same brand of vehicles.

His special assistants received theirs last month except a few who are expected to be given alongside the remaining commissioners this week.

Last month, the minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, rejected the same brand of vehicle given to him by the governor.

According to the minister, he rejected the gift because the laws of the state excluded him from persons eligible to collect such gifts.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently arrested Governor Umahi’s brother, Austin Umahi, over the alleged  role he played in disbursing funds reportedly used to bribe electoral officers during the 2015 elections.
