The teachers in Imo state have called out the state governor, Rochas Okorocha over unpaid salaries and unfulfilled promises. Some of them have reportedly not being paid since January 2016, adding up to about 10 months in salary arrears.

Comrade Napoleon Emenike Aniche the chairman of the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), while giving his 2016 World Teachers Day address in the state, on Wednesday, October 5, said: “It is indeed worrisome to note that despite the 70 percent salaries paid to your hardworking teachers, some have not been paid their January, or February, or March 2016 salaries.

“Some have been waiting for two months, some one month. We have a compilation of the teachers involved.”

Also condemning  the level of decayed infrastructure in the state owned schools, he said: “We have fulfilled all the conditions stipulated by the rescue mission in keeping with the repairs and pray the promised school running costs be immediately released to schools to enable them provide the needed items to keep teaching and learning afloat.

“Imo teachers demand that their full salaries be restored with effect from September salaries and all the arrears of deduction be paid before the end of this year.”

“It is not only worrisome but unacceptable to Imo teachers and Principals in particular to allow a consultant to register their students for Junior School Certificate Examination for them.

“Our retired colleagues are mere ghost of themselves. They are owed backlog arrears pensions and no mention is being made about their gratuities.”

Ironically, Governor Okorocha has earned plaudits for his gesture of goodwill towards Imo state gold medallists at the just concluded Rio Paralympic Games.

The Imo state governor reportedly redeemed his pledge of N1m and a car each to the three Paralympic gold medalists from Imo state. They are; Roland Ezurike, Nwosu Ndidi and Orji Josephine Precious.

Meanwhile, the Imo state commissioner for education, science and technology, Mrs Gertrude Ego Oduka recently announced the suspension of some school principals in the state.

The affected officials are principals of Community Secondary School Orogwe, Government Technical College, Owerri and Emmanuel College, also in Owerri. Mrs Oduka also directed the suspended principals to handover relevant documents in their possessions to their subordinates.
