At least 3 people died after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday, October 16, invaded Galwyi community in Chikun LGA, Kaduna.

“As soon as they came close, the dogs of our vigilantes began to bark. When they neared the village, they started to shoot into the air. They had heavy weapons but our vigilantes responded. While the fight lasted, some of the bandits stole our cattle,” the source said.

However, it was discovered that two members of the village were dead shortly after the attack.

The source gave the names of those killed as Sunday Garba, 23, and Inua Gaube, 27.

He said two others were critically injured and were taken to an undisclosed hospital, adding that one of the gunmen was killed by the community’s vigilantes.

“They left with not less than 100 cows. The police from Gwagwada outpost arrived soon after we called for help. They chased them into the night, but had to retreat later. We killed one of them, but they fled with the corpse,” the source said.

It was gathered that soon after the gunmen had wreaked havoc on the village, they went ahead to tell the people of Kawure, Guidna and Zhedna – all neighbours of Galwyi, that the next attacks would be launched against them.

Reacting to the report, Aliyu Usman, the police public relations officer, Kaduna state police command, said he was in Godogodo with the state Police Commissioner for an on-the-spot assessment.

Usman said: “I have been briefed. But as soon as I get back and the details are made available to me, I shall let you know.”

Meanwhile, the death toll in the attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on the natives of Godogodo town, Jema’ah local government area, Kaduna state, has hit 40.

Solomon Musa, the national president of Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union, said that so far, the people of the community had been able to identify not less than 40 corpses apart from the several other corpses burnt beyond recognition.
