Prominent Muslim cleric speaks on the issue of the Fulani-farmer conflict
The Sultan of Sokoto distanced himself from the herdsmen and called for their arrest and prosecution
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on October 10, Monday, has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Fulani herdsmen.
The monarch, who is Fulani, dissociated self from the killers, saying that the herdsmen should be mistaken to be representing Fulani of Muslims Interest in Nigeria.
The Sultan was speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day annual pan-northern groups summit on security, socio-economic and political development in Kaduna state.
“There are very terrible herdsmen who kill. But they are acting on their own, they are criminals and they must be treated as criminals. Therefore the Federal Government should prosecute them,” he stated.
“It is disheartening to hear when people say Fulani herdsmen want to Islamise Nigeria and that is why they are killing. Any Fulani herdsman who kills is not acting the script of Fulani community in Nigeria, neither is he working for the Muslim community.”
Continuing with the issue of the state of the northern Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto added that the unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable if the region must develop and have a common front.
He maintained that, the North of today was not the North that Sardauna of Sokoto.
Ahmadu Bello, who was also speaking at the event, said that, there is ethnic awareness among northerners now, than ever before.
The herdsmen-farmer conflict is just one of several security problems the federal government is trying to deal with.
The militant Boko Haram sect, which pledged allegiance to the ISIS in March 2015 is continuing a bloody insurgency in the northeast despite the claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that the group is technically defeated.
Today, the city of Sokoto remains the centre of Nigerian Islam and has a huge mosque opposite the Sultan’s palace.
