How gunmen invaded High Court, held judge hostage

Over 10 gunmen on Wednesday, November 2, invaded three different courts in the Makurdi, Benue state

A sitting judge Justice Mary Abounu who is also the deputy governor’s wife was held hostage

They broke into the courtroom and the chambers where they carted away one computer, a printer, a generator and files for various cases

There was pandemonium at in Makurdi, Benue state on Wednesday, November 2, as over 10 gunmen invaded three different courts in the state.

The gunmen who sporadically shot into the air also held a sitting judge hostage during their attack.

News agency of Nigeria reports that residents fled in various directions during the incident.

It was also gathered that the attackers invaded Benue state High Court 9, a chief Magistrate Court and the Upper Area Court – all Benue state.

Also, wife of the deputy governor, Justice Mary Abounu was seated when the incident happened.

The gunmen were said to have stormed into her court and held her hostage throughout the attack.

A magistrate Isaac Ajim who spoke on the attack said: “Actually, the first court the hoodlums visited was the Magistrate’s Court 1. They broke into the courtroom and the chambers, where they carted away one computer, a printer, a generator as well as files for various cases.”

He said: “After the criminals were done with my court, they proceeded to High Court 9, presided over by the wife of the deputy governor, Justice Mary Abounu, and carted away a refrigerator, three stabilizers, a set of computer, window blinds and left behind empty bottles of drinks.”

Meanwhile, a senior advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana has condemned the nonchalance attitude of the National Judicial Council over activities of some allegedly corrupt lawyers.

Falana in a recent statement said He has always known some lawyers are untouchable as far as the NJC is concerned.

Falana said: “The image of the country’s judiciary is at its lowest ebb. The judiciary has never witnessed such humiliation before.”

“After the condemnation of the barbaric raid on the houses of the judges by the State Security Service goons, the NJC should proceed to examine the allegations of judicial corruption without any further delay,” the senior advocate said.
