PDP convention: Mark cautions against Impunity

Former Senate president, David Mark attributes the defeat of the PDP in the last general election to self-inflicted injuries

Cautions party members against cross carpeting

Expresses his resolve to remain in the PDP no matter the challenges

Former Senate president, David Mark, has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to avoid the past mistakes of imposition of candidates ahead of its national convention.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mark gave the warning in a statement released to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, August 8, by his media aide, Paul Mumeh.

Mark who attributed the defeat of the PDP in the last general election to self-inflicted injuries due to imposition of candidates and the impunity of some of its leaders, urged party delegates to elect rather than allow candidates to be imposed as was done in the 2015 elections.

The former senate president cautioned party members against cross carpeting, noting that it does not enhance democratic culture nor the integrity and credibility of politicians that decamp.

“If we must uphold the sanctity of democratic culture, we must follow the path of honour like the Democrats and Republicans in the U. S. A. or follow the examples of the Labour Party or the Conservatives in the UK.

“These are politicians who hold on tenaciously to their political ideologies no matter the odds,” he said.

He expressed his resolve to remain in the PDP no matter the challenges, as it had offered him the platform to contest and win elections since 1999.

Meanwhile, two heavy weights in the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), Raymond Dokpesi and Bode George have picked the forms to contest for the position of national chairman of the party.

Dokpesi’s intention to contest for the position was clouded in uncertainty after party members at a meeting of the southern PDP stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Thursday, August 4, zoned the position to the south-west.

But Dokpesi, who picked his form in Abuja on Friday, August, 5, said the zoning was not legally binding on any aspirant.
